Lo-Ellen Park Music Program
The Lo-Ellen Park Music Program is an internationally recognized program with a long tradition of musical excellence. Students of all experience levels are welcomed in our music program with beginner classes starting in grade nine and more advanced classes continuing through to grade 12.
In the grade nine music class (AMU 1O0), students build a strong foundation for playing the instrument of their choice. Being a band program, students have the option of playing: flute, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, baritone saxophone, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, french horn, electric or upright bass, or percussion (snare drum, drum kit, mallet percussion, etc.). They can continue to develop their skills in grade 10, 11, and 12 music classes (AMU 2/3/4).
At Lo-Ellen Park, we also offer musical ensembles for high school credit.
GRADE NINE CONCERT BAND AMI 1O0
Students in grade nine can play in the grade nine concert band where they will develop ensemble skills, perform, and compete in local music festivals. It is strongly recommended that students who play in the Grade Nine Concert Band also enrol in grade nine music class (AMU 1O0). This ensemble has a yearly performance trip to either the Wonderland Festival of Music or MusicFest Canada (Nationals).
JAZZ ORCHESTRA AMH 1/2/3/4
Grade 9-12 students are able to perform with our Jazz Orchestra. The Jazz Orchestra is an invitational ensemble that performs a variety of styles such as: traditional jazz, swing, bossa nova/ latin, funk, rock, pop. Students must play in the grade nine concert band or the sr. concert band to be a member of this group.
SENIOR CONCERT BAND AMI 2/3/4
Students in grades 10-12 can play in the Sr. Concert Band. This band is the cornerstone of our program and performs often for school events, concerts, local music festivals, etc. This ensemble has a yearly performance trip in April or May where we compete internationally. Past performance trips have included: New York City, Nashville, Niagara Falls (MusicFest Canada), Boston, etc. Students are encouraged to also enrol in grade 10/11/12 music class (AMU 2/3/4).
GRADE 11 GUITAR COURSE (AMG 3O)
Step into a high school guitar class that feels more like a backstage pass than a typical period. Led by a dynamic, high-energy teacher who brings passion, humor, and real musical experience into every lesson, this class is where beginners become players and players become performers. Students don’t just learn chords—they learn how to express themselves, jam with others, and build confidence through music. Whether you’ve never picked up a guitar or already know a few songs, you’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired. It’s more than a class—it’s an experience that sticks with you long after the final bell. Taking Guitar (AMG3O) will be one of the best choices a student can make at Lo-Ellen.
Drama
Drama at Lo-Ellen Park covers a large range of curricular and co-curricular activities. The Grade 9 developmental drama course tries to ensure that students enhance their self-confidence and self-esteem while improving their problem-solving skills through constant group activities that are as entertaining as they are challenging. Students have the opportunity to work with tableaux, pantomime, improvisation, monologues, dialogues, script work, and scenes. Senior drama classes go deeper into character development and play production, and many of these plays are presented for the school community.
The LEP Theatre Company, through its Musical Theatre credit course, has been presenting large-scale musical productions since the mid-1980s, and people are always impressed by the polished professionalism of these productions. Some of the most popular and influential shows in the history of Broadway have been presented to great acclaim. Musical Theatre students also present an annual variety show of skits, sketches, songs, and dance numbers. The Variety Show plays to packed houses every fall.
